Airport lounge access without a first-class ticket
Lounges are easier to get into than they look. The main routes, from free to paid.
Ways in
- Premium cabin ticket. Business or first on most full-service airlines, including on partner airlines in the same alliance.
- Elite status. Star Alliance Gold, oneworld Sapphire or Emerald, SkyTeam Elite Plus give lounge access even on economy tickets within the alliance.
- Credit cards. Many premium cards bundle Priority Pass, Dragon Pass or the card issuer's own lounges. Check guest rules and visit limits.
- Day passes. Most airline and independent lounges sell entry for USD 30 to 75 at the door or online, often cheaper online.
- Lounge membership. Priority Pass and similar programmes sell annual memberships with a set number of visits.
Is it worth it?
For a two-hour layover with a meal included, a day pass usually beats airport restaurant prices. For a 45-minute connection it is not. Independent lounges vary a lot; recent reviews on lounge-tracking apps are a good guide.
Rules that surprise people
- Access is usually limited to three hours before departure.
- Arrival lounges exist only at a handful of hubs.
- Lounges can turn away cardholders when full; arrive early at busy hubs.
